The Penguin Book of Canadian Short Stories
Selected and Introduced
by Jane Urquhart

Almost twenty years after the publication of Michael Ondaatje's generation defining From Ink Lake, Jane Urquhart, one of Canada's most respected and prolific writers has personally compiled The Penguin Book of Canadian Short Stories, the most diverse and definitive collection of our nation's literature ever published. Featuring selections by more than sixty of the country's best writers, the weighty anthology spans more than a century, including perennial favourites like Carol Shields and Margaret Laurence, dispatches from the dawn of the twentieth century from Stephen Leacock and Lucy Maud Montgomery and celebrated stories by boomer luminaries like Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and Timothy Findley who defined a nation in the sixties and seventies. The stunning breadth of talent displayed by today's most popular authors is well represented by prize winners, best sellers and critical favourites like Austin Clarke, Barbara Gowdy and Guy Vanderhaeghe. Urquhart also pays special attention to a new generation of unique talents like Joseph Boyden, Michael Winter and Sheila Heti who are currently at work challenging Canadian readers to engage with the national dialogue between the covers. The Penguin Anthology of Canadian Short Fiction is the perfect introduction to the best literature our nation has to offer.

Jane Urquhart is the author of five internationally acclaimed novels, including The Underpainter, which won the Governor General's Award and The Stone Carvers, which was a finalist for the Giller Prize and the Governor General's Award and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. She is also the author of a collection of short fiction and four books of poetry. She has received the Marian Engel Award and is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Jane Urquhart lives in Southwestern Ontario.
