Nicole Williams Guest Column

With the launch of her new book, Wildly Sophisticated, Nicole Williams will be helping young women across North America build their dream careers. This month, she reflects on her own dreams come true and what she's hoping for next.

"The price of self-destiny is never cheap and in certain circumstances it is unthinkable. But to achieve the marvellous it is precisely the unthinkable that must be thought." — Tom Robbins

I will never forget the day. Sunning myself in Mexico with a few girlfriends from university, I read this line from The Jitterbug Perfume and my life was never, ever the same. I knew in my heart a solid three years earlier that I was going to create a business to help young women create career success, but I couldn't get myself into motion. I was thinking, dreaming, talking—but not doing. That was, of course, until that fateful day. The concept of the unthinkable propelled me into action.

The unthinkable. Wildly Sophisticated Media is the culmination of every single unthinkable I could muster that day on the beach. A book published by the largest and most respected publishing house in the world. A television show that features women in compelling industries that we'd all love to live for an hour (or a lifetime). A thriving business with a clear vision, helmed by a team of the most talented, inspiring people I could find.

Somehow I knew that if I could live my unthinkable, I would be in the position to legitimately share the "wealth," and now that day has come. With my unthinkable firmly in hand, I've been touring North America asking young women the question, "what is your unthinkable?" I was a solid fifteen presentations in, looking around the room at the sometimes pensive, sometimes elated faces of these young women when, with a moment to myself, I quite literally re-asked myself the same question.

A line of Wildly Sophisticated business accessories and clothing? A syndicated radio and television series? Preparing to release our second book? Yes, yes, and yes, but if I'm honest, my new unthinkable is more than business—it's pleasure. It's relationships, it's bringing together the women I've met across the country, and it's a vacation! Just like all the young women I work with and for, I too have been experiencing that full sprint toward success. On some days, as exciting as it feels, I'm running so fast that I'm not able to catch my breath and actually enjoy, let alone "live," the experience.

I'm learning that the unthinkable is as much about realizing the big dream as it is about actually enjoying the ride. And sometimes the unthinkable (especially for all us Type As out there) is not so much about trying more, but trusting more.

You just never know. After realizing this relaxation-filled vision, maybe my next book will be about achieving balance. Now that really is unthinkable!

What's your unthinkable?
