About Us
The Penguin Group
Founded by Allen Lane in 1935, Penguin was born from a desire to democratize culture through fresh publishing practices. Penguin's innovative production of paperback books offered masterpieces of thought and imagination at an affordable price, even in the midst of the Depression: priced at sixpence each, Penguins were one-tenth the cost of an average hardback novel. After only one year on the market, Penguin had sold more than three million paperback books.

Today Penguin produces both paperbacks and hardcovers on a wide range of subjects for both adults and children. The Penguin Group has divisions in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States.
