Hamish Hamilton

Founded in 1931 by Jamie Hamilton as one of Britain's most distinguished literary lists, Hamish Hamilton quickly became an integral part of Penguin and continues to provide a home for an exciting and eclectic group of authors, united by the distinctiveness and excellence of their writing. Publishing a select list of titles each year, both fiction and non-fiction, their authors include Alain de Botton, W.G. Sebald, Zadie Smith, and Paul Theroux.

We're delighted to be joining this tradition of literary merit with the launch of Hamish Hamilton Canada. Our inaugural list includes three remarkable works of fiction, by acclaimed Canadian authors Colin McAdam and Kim Echlin, and international Booker prize–shortlisted author Ali Smith. And readers can look forward to titles by Helen Oyeyemi, Zadie Smith, and Hisham Matar.

Like our British counterpart, Hamish Hamilton Canada will maintain a deep commitment to literary value, embracing both young and old, the experimental and the new, and continuing to be selective with a list of five to ten titles per year.

Over seventy years ago, Jamie Hamilton's first catalogue opened with the words: "This first Hamish Hamilton list looks like the start of a new lighthouse—it will be noticeable at a great distance in the dark." That lighthouse is still alight and burning brightly and will now shine on Canadian readers.
